WHAT  IS PAWS IN PRISON

Paws in Prison is the non-profit fund raising arm of a win-win program that places homeless dogs in correctional facilities where they are trained and socialized by prison inmates.

It is a fully self-sustaining program, where-by inmates are trained to train other inmates to prepare these otherwise unadoptable,  ‘last-leg,’   dogs  for new, permanent family homes.

Nationally recognized dog trainer, Jay King, is the master trainer of the program.   At the core of King’s training philosophy are the parallels and kinship he establishes between the men and the dogs, both of whom have failed at finding comfortable stations in society.

For inmates, this is a life changing program.   They learn patience, team work and  gain confidence in their ability to contribute to society as they make a difference in the lives of these animals and the families that adopt them.

HOW IT WORKS

Twelve, healthy, spay/neutered dogs are selected from various animal welfare groups to go into, and live inside, a prison facility for eight to ten weeks of training and socialization .

These are usually  ‘last-leg’ dogs,  that their shelter has not been able to adopt-out.

Each dog is assigned a  ‘trainer’  and a ‘handler.’   The dog sleeps in a crate in the prison dormitory right next to the cot of the ‘trainer.’     It is the inmates  job to housetrain the dog, teach him the basic obedience commands, and to help build the animal’s ability to trust and relate to people.

During the eight week training process, the PawsNPrison organization begins distributing information about the dogs in the class.  The goal is to have a selected, approved home for each animal when he graduates.

At the graduation ceremony, inmates are given certificates for their work.  Special awards are handed out for  ‘Most Improved’  and for  ‘Top Dog’.     Within hours of the dogs graduating and leaving the correctional facility with their  ‘gate pass’ ,   another twelve dogs are brought into the facility and the training begins anew.
